The LSC is currently piloting an Adult Learning Grant (ALG) in 25 areas across England, including Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Adult Learning Grant is a means-tested allowance of up to £30 per week offered to adults (19+) on low income and studying full time for a first full FE and LSC funded level 2 or level 3 qualification.

Fiona Blacke, Regional Director of Learning, Planning and Performance for the LSC in Yorkshire and the Humber, comments: "The grant helps those who have not succeeded in their initial education and want to get the qualifications they need for their future careers. It also encourages people to stay on courses and achieve qualifications by helping overcome the barrier of cost of living, whilst they are studying."

The Adult Learning Grant is not exclusive and students can access other learner support funds, as well as Career Development Loans alongside ALG, if they wish. It is, however, only available to learners in full-time FE learning, with workplace learning not counting towards guided learning hours.

In North and West Yorkshire, eligible learners will be paid on a sliding scale from £10-£30 with payments determined by the learners' income and that of any co-habiting partner. In the Humber and South Yorkshire all eligible learners earning up to £30,000 are paid a flat rate of £30 a week.

Application packs are available from participating colleges, or from learndirect by calling 0800 100 900. To find out more visit www.adultlearninggrant.com
