Young people get a taste of future careers
The LSC in Yorkshire and the Humber is backing the biggest careers and skills event in the region - Skills Yorkshire and the Humber. Taking place at Sheffield Arena on 8 and 9 October 2008, the event is aimed at inspiring and engaging 14-19 year olds about the career options available to them through a variety of interactive activities. The event, which is sponsored exclusively by the LSC, will host more than 70 organisations who will meet and talk to the 7,500 young people expected to attend the event: the workforce of the future. Whether visitors want to try their hands at cooking for a battalion in the Army field kitchen or even make a report in a BBC studio, there will be a wide range of inspirational activities to get involved in, giving them a taste of what their chosen career could involve.
Margaret Coleman, regional director for the LSC in Yorkshire and the Humber, said: "Our region is bursting with opportunities for young people and this event is about helping to identify the best route for each individual; whether that is an Apprenticeship, vocational qualification, a degree or another form of learning. "This event provides an important platform for employers to showcase the job opportunities available to young people, who will play a vital role in driving the region's economy forward as part of the future workforce."
Skills Yorkshire and the Humber is expected to attract thousands of young people, parents, careers and teachers. Experts will be on hand to help with questions about work, education and training in dedicated Advice Clinics. Demonstrations including fashion shows, science experiments and makeovers will take place throughout the two days showcasing what local colleges, training providers and sector skills councils have to offer young people.
